NIPOST Digital Postcode: What It Is and How to Find Yours

The NIPOST digital postcode is an 11-character code for one building, such as FC 02 A09 DB 09. It launched nationwide on 1 October 2026. Find yours free, with no account, at postcode.gov.ng/find using your phone’s location, a Google Maps link or an address.

The code belongs to the building, not to you. If you move, you use the code of your new building.

What the digital postcode is

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System gives each addressable building in Nigeria its own code, linked to its location on the map. It is run by NIPOST (the Nigerian Postal Service) at postcode.gov.ng.

The Federal Executive Council approved the system in March 2026. The Minister of Communications, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch on 1 October 2026.

The 5 parts of the code

Each code reads from the widest area down to the single building. This is NIPOST’s own example:

Part In the example What it is
State FC 2 letters for the state (FC is the Federal Capital Territory)
LGA 02 2 digits for the LGA (Local Government Area) within the state
District A09 3 letters or digits for the district within the LGA
Area DB 2 letters for the area within the district
Building 09 The number of the building within the area

You can write it with spaces (FC 02 A09 DB 09) or without (FC02A09DB09). Some codes NIPOST shows have a 3-digit building number, such as FC 02 D11 AJ 003, so copy your code exactly as the finder shows it.

How to find your digital postcode

On the website

Go to postcode.gov.ng/find. Choose one of three ways:

  • Use my location gets the code of the building you are standing at.
  • Use map link lets you paste a Google Maps link.
  • Use address lets you type an address.

It is free and needs no account or sign-in.

On the app

As of 2 October 2026, the NIPOST Postcode app is live on Google Play for Android. The iPhone (App Store) version is marked “Soon” on postcode.gov.ng.

In the app, tap Find My Postcode, allow location access, then tap your building on the map. The app does not pick the nearest building for you, so check that the highlighted building is yours before you copy the code.

If your building has no code

Request one. When the finder shows “No postcode found”, use the Request Postcode link on the website or in the app.

You give your address, some details about the building and, if you like, photos. NIPOST reviews the request and says you should get a response within 24 hours.

Do not borrow a neighbour’s code. Each code points to one building, so the code next door sends people to the building next door.

NIPOST told reporters that bigger cities go live first, with all 36 states and the FCT targeted by December 2026.

Old 6-digit postal code or new digital postcode?

They are two different codes. The 6-digit postal code covers an area, such as Garki, Abuja 900001. The digital postcode points to one building.

We have not found a NIPOST notice that retires the 6-digit codes or sets an end date for them. We will update this page if NIPOST publishes one.

If the form asks for Enter
“Postal code”, “Postcode” or “ZIP code” with room for 6 digits Your area’s 6-digit postal code
“NIPOST digital postcode” or an 11-character code Your building’s digital postcode
Your exact location, for a delivery or visit Your street address plus your digital postcode

Find your 6-digit code on our state pages, for example Lagos State or FCT Abuja. These codes are the ones listed in NIPOST’s published allocation; we cannot check them against a live NIPOST database (how we check our data). For forms on foreign websites, see Nigeria ZIP code: what to enter on US and foreign forms.

NIN and the digital postcode

The postcode itself carries no information about who you are. Several people, families or businesses in one building share the same code.

In July 2026, NIMC (the National Identity Management Commission) and NIPOST signed an agreement to link the NIN system with the digital postcode. NIMC said work had begun to let people retrieve their postcode through its NINAuth platform. We could not confirm that this feature is live yet.

One NIN link is already in the app: NIPOST’s Proof of Address certificate ties your ID to your building’s postcode. You can use your NIN, international passport, driver’s licence or PVC, and it costs ₦1,500 per request.

What the “validation exercise” was

In June 2026, before launch, NIPOST flagged off a nationwide Postcode Model Field Validation Exercise in Abuja. It checked the building and area outlines NIPOST had drawn from aerial images against what is actually on the ground. The reports we found did not ask residents to do anything.
